Save Over $1,300 A Year With This Easy Chart

Every new year, I like to set some new goals. One of the goals I like to create focuses on saving a little more money. I’ve found the following approach a great way to save over $1,300 a year.

The wonderful folks over at A Helicopter Mom put together this easy chart to help you track your savings goal.

Make Saving Money Simple

The concept is simple: Make a weekly deposit that matches which week of the plan you’re on e.g. $1 on week one, $2 on week two, etc. The largest sum of money you’ll put away is $52 on week 52.

The beauty of this approach to saving is that you ease into it. You become accustomed to setting money aside each week with amounts that won’t break the bank for most of us. By the time you hit the halfway point—week 26—you’ll store $26, bringing your yearly balance to $351. At the end of 52 weeks, you’ll have socked away $1,378 total.

Some of our readers have made the fine suggestion of doing this challenge backwards. It’s easier to get the hard part out of the way first, and then countdown to zero!

What Are You Saving For?

A Helicopter Mom says on her blog that a trip to Disney World motivated her to find a way to save without having to pay one large sum all at once. Considering that there’s a new “Avatar”-themed section now open at Disney, plus a possible “Star Wars”-themed hotel in the works. has there ever been a better time to visit The Happiest Place on Earth? Likely not.

Maybe you won’t use your $1,378 to fund a vacation but instead to buy holiday gifts, pay down debt, finally get that car repaired or fund several months of groceries.

Speaking of groceries, check out this other handy chart to see how much you should be spending on groceries each month based on the size of your family.

Growing Slower

Based on a “thrifty” budget, a family of four should be spending between $557-707 each month on groceries. That’s between $139.25 and $176.75 a week. A family of two could get by on $392 a month, which breaks out to just $98 a week. And if you are flying solo, Growing Slower thinks you could squeak by on around $50 a week of groceries.

You may have to get creative with couponing and strategic store shopping (for example, figure out what to buy and what not to buy at big box stores like Sam’s and Costco) in order to hit this budget. But just think, the more money you save at the grocery store, the more you’ll have to put away.

Try Skinning A Watermelon For An Awesome Party Trick

Peeling fruit is all kinds of useful for when you’re having a dinner party or just have picky eaters in your house. Some are easier to peel than others though. Ever get those deliciously juicy Florida oranges? Insanely hard to peel.

Well this sweet party trick is brought to you by former NASA Engineer Mark Rober from his YouTube channel. I had no idea this could be done, or why you’d want to, but it makes total sense when you watch it. Very cool.

You’ve Likely Been Cutting Your Cake Wrong All This Time

Ever have one of those moments when you realize you’ve been doing something so wrong your entire life and the solution is SO OBVIOUS?!? That’s how I’m feeling now after watching this clip from Numberphile.

Apparently cutting a round cake into triangles is all wrong. The best way to do it is to cut a rectangle through the middle so that you can push the cake back together and keep it fresh for longer. Alex Bellos, a mathematician, uses this Letter to the Editor from a 1906 weekly Science magazine titled Nature to help with his demonstration.

Watch the tutorial and get ready to kick your cake-cutting game up a notch!

The 25 Worst Airports You’ll Want To Skip This Holiday Season

Holiday flying is the worst. There’s nothing quite like sitting in a metal tube 30,000 feet in the sky with your knees up under your chin battling for arm rest supremacy while you catch a million colds. And that’s after you got strip-searched by the TSA and then charged the gate only to realize that “Zone 2” is the new “Zone 7”.

Avoid the madness and watch this video so you know which terrible airports to skip when planning your holiday travels.

Watch This Gorgeous Drone Footage Of Giant Whales Swimming Near A Tiny Human Paddleboarder

This video of southern right whales swimming off the coast of Esperance, Australia is absolutely beautiful. Jamien Hudson, an Esperance local, managed to capture the footage using a DJI Phantom 3 drone. The clip is shot in 4k, so if you have the right TV setup it will look even better.

Here’s what Jamien Hudson had to say in an interview with Mashable Australia:

“It just so happened that he was out at the time, and a few people let me know there were whales on the beach and it all just went from there,” Hudson explained. “They were really curious and came over to meet [Dave] … Just very inquisitive about him, I don’t think it was really that dangerous at all.”

Adorable Little Kids Too Busy Doing The Nae Nae Forget All About Football

These cute little kids trying to scrimmage during halftime at a varsity game forgot all about the game.

As soon as “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” starts, the Milford Mighty Mites start dancing, and some don’t stop even when the ball is snapped. Let’s all agree that this is awesome and perhaps one day we can let it all go when our song comes on.

Shave Like A Time Traveler With This Futuristic Laser Razor

In case it wasn’t clear enough, the future is now. Skarp Technologies, with a modest fundraising goal of $160,000 for their neato Kickstarter project, has blown off the roof by raising over $2 million for their Skarp Laser Razor.

According to their Kickstarter page, Skarp Technologies claims to have “discovered a chromophore in the hair that would be cut when hit with a particular light wavelength.” (Read here for more on chromophores). Hence the laser in the razor. Awesome.

All I know is that now I absolutely need a laser razor more than I have ever needed anything. Next step, actual human testing in the Simplemost Laser Razor Testing Labs.

Watch This 92-Year-Old Man Sing To His Dying Wife

This touching video seems to be a scene straight out of The Notebook. 92-year old Howard is seen singing “You’ll Never Know” by Rosemary Clooney with Harry James to his wife Laura.

Filmed by the couple’s granddaughter, Erin Solari, she expressed that she recorded this tender exchange to capture their final moments together. According to Erin’s comments on her YouTube video, the couple was still madly love and this was their love song. When Howard went away to fight in WWII, this song comforted Laura. And at family gathering’s they often sang it together.

In fact, after fifty years of marriage, they renewed their vows and performed this song as a duet for the entire family at the reception. Sadly, Grandma is now too weak to sing, but that doesn’t stop her from saying the words to him (see at 1:00).

When she cannot continue the song, Howard gently takes over and sings the remainder of the tune. The best part about this story is in Erin’s update below:

After posting this video to Facebook, it began to go viral and all the outpouring of love lifted everyone’s spirits… including Grandma’s! Hospice eventually deemed her well enough to go back home to live out her remaining few days. As of this posting my beautiful Grandma Laura Virginia is still with us resting peacefully at home. Our family along with the wonderful people from hospice are taking care of her and making sure she remains as pain-free and comfortable as possible while she prepares for her nearing departure. We all thank you so much for the love and kind words.

Here’s The Science Behind Why Left-Handed People Are Truly Special

About one-tenth of the world is left-handed and according to archaeological evidence, that’s been true for 500,000 years. Whoa.

So how come left-handers are still around? In this fascinating Ted video, Daniel M. Abrams explains how a mathematical model suggests that the reason is something to do with the “balance between competitive and cooperative pressure in human evolution”.

So if you’re a lefty or you know one, there’s more to it than being a hard-to-hit pitcher, or having trouble using regular scissors.

Here’s some more information on our lefty pals:

This Inspirational 104-Year-Old Grandmother Yarn-Bombed Three Towns

Meet Grace Brett of the Souter Stormers knitting club. She’s a 104-year-old street grandmother and street artist. Her and her merry band of knitters recently yarn-bombed the Scottish towns of Selkirk, Ettrickbridge and Yarrow.

The truly inspiring thing is how prodigious the group is. The photos over at the Daily Record show just how much knitting and creativity went into this secret project. I can only hope that I’ll be this lucid and productive at 104.

Amazing Rare Pink Dolphin Seen In Louisiana Again

A charter Captain down in Louisiana by the name of Erik Rue, of Calcasieu Charter Service, has spotted this insane looking pink dolphin. Again.

This isn’t the first time. Rue remembers seeing the dolphin eight years ago swimming next to it’s mother. Here’s what Rue told WGNO:

“We still see her swimming almost every day in the summertime.  We’ve seen her a lot in the last few weeks. She looks happy and healthy,” Rue said.

Of course they named her “Pinky”. So there you have it. I’d never heard of a pink dolphin until today!

We Can’t Believe This Turkish Guy Is Actually 95 Years Old

Humans have been searching for the fountain of youth for a long long time. You can certainly try eating healthier, sleeping better, or exercising more, but purportedly 95-year-old Yogi Kazim Gurbuz has acquired some wisdom along the years. I mean, look at the guy! Can you believe he’s 95?! Seriously.

“İnsanlar daha doğru dürüst nefes almasını bilemedikleri için hasta oluyorlar. Çocuklara Beden Eğitimi derslerinde nefes almayı öğretmek gerekir.”Yogi Kazım Gürbüz

Apparently a car crash at the age of 41 that left him paralyzed was the trigger to revamping his lifestyle. The youthful looking 95-year-old Yogi credits his health and longevity to his daily routine of yoga, swimming and a healthy diet, including pinto beans, olives and honey.

“We can live to be 130 years old,” says Kazim. “Everyone has the power.”

So this is a pretty crazy story if true, but we can’t argue with how great the guy looks for his age.
