Thank you, Chrissy Teigen, for keeping it real and helping new moms everywhere feel more comfortable in their own post-baby bodies.
In an interview with TODAY, the model and mom to a baby girl, Luna, opened up about motherhood and the struggle to lose baby weight. And, simply put, she says celebrities are not normal.
What’s Her Secret?
Her big secret to looking like red-carpet perfection in what feels like only five minutes after giving birth? She has help, and lots of it.
“Anyone in the public eye, we have all the help we could ever need to be able to shed everything. So I think people get this jaded sensation that everybody’s losing it so quickly, but we just happen to be the ones who are out there. We have nutritionists, we have dietitians, we have trainers, we have our own schedules, we have nannies. We have people who make it possible for us to get back into shape. But nobody should feel like that’s normal, or like that’s realistic.”
Can I get a hallelujah?! Teigen, who’s married to singer John Legend, is known for telling it like it is—and we’re so happy she did in this case.
Teigen’s Message For New Moms
But seriously, new moms struggling with their new post-baby bodies, know that we have all struggled right along with you.
Stop comparing yourselves to celebrities because, as Teigen reminds us, it’s not realistic.
Teigen’s message reminds us of this blogger who shared these unexpected before-and-after selfies online in an effort to reinforce that being a mom changes our bodies—and that, sometimes, even if we weigh more after giving birth than we did before, we may actually be happier that way.
“I have achieved more with this body, then I have with my old body. I’ve eaten more good foods. I’ve lived more, I’ve given more, I’ve enjoyed more. I’ve made life. This body, THIS body should be celebrated and admired,” the blogger, Laura Mazza, wrote.
Your body may not return to its former pre-kid glory in days, months or even ever, and that’s OK. Your body made a human! It is capable and beautiful, and your scars, stretch marks and squishy boobs are a part of that story. You are radiant—and normal.
Teigen’s Struggles With Postpartum Depression
Teigen has also opened up about her struggles with postpartum depression.
She opened up about it on Instagram and wrote an essay for Glamour last spring about her struggle. In it, she says she had everything she needed to be happy, and yet, she wasn’t.
“What basically everyone around me—but me—knew up until December was this: I have postpartum depression,” she writes. “How can I feel this way when everything is so great?”
Teigen says she didn’t think something like this could happen to her. She loves her life and has all the help she needs, but postpartum depression and anxiety do not discriminate.
“I’m speaking up now because I want people to know it can happen to anybody and I don’t want people who have it to feel embarrassed or to feel alone,” she writes.
Teigen wrote the essay in February, just over a month after being diagnosed. She says in just that short time, she is “a much different human.”
We thank Chrissy for being so open with her life and the struggle that many women face around the globe. An estimated 10-20 percent of mothers suffer from postpartum depression, though the number of those affected is likely higher when you factor in those who don’t receive treatment.
