With a nickname like “White Lightning,” you better live up to expectations. Well, Houston, Texas teenager Matthew Boling certainly did that! Boling floored crowds Saturday with a 9.98-second finish in the 100-meter event at the Class 6A Region III track and field meet. At just 18 years old, he destroyed his high school’s previous high school “all-conditions” 100-meter record.
Boling, a senior at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, certainly provided the highlight of his team’s second straight team title at the track and field meet. That said, because of a 4.2 mph wind, his 9.98-second time will not officially count as a national record, according to the Houston Chronicle. Despite that caveat, his win is considered the fastest open 100 time in all conditions in high school history.
“It definitely felt good,” Boling said in an interview with the Chronicle. “My block start was pretty good and right out of the gate I knew it was going to be fast, so I decided to turn it up a little bit and ran my best. I was really happy with the time.”

To make things even more impressive, the senior only began running the open 100 this year. Local TV station KHOU-11 reports that he clocked a 10.22 second time in the 100-meter dash last month.
However, the teenager wasn’t done. He also succeeded at wowing the Challenger Columbia Stadium crowd in three more events: two relays and the long jump.
Boling helped his team win gold in the 400-meter relay with a record time of 40.72 seconds. In the 1,600-meter relay event, he helped usher his team to another gold with a time of 3:13.7.
And as for the icing on the cake? He won the long jump event with a distance of 25 feet and 2 inches.
The Houston Chronicle at @HoustonChronHS named him the boys’ athlete of the week for his achievement:

Next year Boling will be running for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. But don’t count him out for the Olympics. According to CBS News, he’s looking to get there in the future. Best of luck to this super sprinter!
